That girl is a definite creature of habit. Although I love to try new places, like most people I find myself falling into the arms of the familiar on any given dinner out. That is probably why I had never been to Domenico's, a popular italian pizza/pasta joint in Belmont Shore.

Their ads run pretty regularly in the Press-Telegram, so boyfriend and I decided to give it a try. Not to start out on a sour note, but honestly... not too impressed. Someday I'll write about Buona Gente and you'll see what 2nd Street is all about. One thing I really liked were the dry crunchy breadsticks they place on the table once you've placed your order. Having heard so much about the
"famous creamy garlic" salad dressing, we asked for a side for dipping. Gotta say... not that garlicky. It seemed to be lacking something, perhaps as simple as salt and pepper, but it basically tasted like mayo and sour cream with a little crushed garlic mixed in. Eh.
Domenico's is famous for their
"ground meats" pizzas, so we opted to share a large, half ground pepperoni and half ground sausage. The pie did look magnificent but again, lacking flavor. The ground pepperoni had no spice at all and
oozed grease. That girl knows pepperoni pizza is supposed to be greasy, but this was ridiculous. The sausage was a little better, but didn't really have that zesty fennel flavor that italian sausage should have.

Just as I was starting to think I wasn't giving this Long Beach institution a fair shake, the bill arrived. I'm sorry, but charging for a two item pizza when you order half and half is crap!
THAT GIRL CALLS BS ON YOU, DOMENICO'S!!! We brought this to the attention of our waiter, who said at least THREE people ask about that EVERY NIGHT and even he disagrees with the policy. I won't be back, and you shouldn't bother either.

Glad you ventured out again. A few posts ago I mentioned Catalano's in Bixby Knolls (Orange & Carson--in the 99Cent store center; where by the way you can also find Brandy's Burgers which are an awesome Saturday lunch with fries, rings and shakes a favorite with us and the kids...I digress). Catalanos is oooold school; crappy formica tables with booths that you sink through the padding on--but who cares? You are just there long enough to enjoy a cold beer waiting for your pie to go. I like the sausage and mushroom. Try it!
I second that yay! I love your blog and the fact that you are a big foodie like me! Gotta disagree on Domenico's, though. We have been eating there for over 20 years and let me tell you, you have not eaten until you try a ground sausage, mushroom, and black olive pizza with the special dressing smeared all over the top of it. (we call it "pizza butter" in our family.) Agree on the pepperoni - it is way too greasy.
I second that yay!! I'm sorry you had a bad experience at Domenico's. Our family has been going there for over 20 years, and always order the same thing (ground sausage, mushroom and black olive pizza with a liberal dose of "pizza butter" (aka special dressing" spread all over the top! Agree with you on the ground pepperoni - way too greasy. We even order a slew of pizzas to take to Seattle when we vacation there so all of the transplanted Long Beach family can savor too.
DC-
Well you convinced me to try Catalano's last night. Review will follow soon... soon meaning when I get off my behind and download the pics.
Debbi & Lisa-
Thanks for the "yay!". Much appreciated. Debbi, by all means keep going to Domenico's. I however, will not be back.
Until next time my faithful readers...
